Demystifying MDT Staffings: How to Force Movement When Case Management Stalls
When a child dependency case stalls, the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) staffing is one of the most powerful levers a family has. Here is what it is, when to demand one, and what happens when the team deadlocks.
What is an MDT staffing?
An MDT staffing is a mandatory meeting where all parties in a child dependency case must convene to evaluate placement options or crisis situations. That includes:
- Case Managers and Family Care Managers
- Therapists
- Parent Counsel
- The child's Attorney ad Litem (AAL)
- The Guardian ad Litem (GAL)
Its power comes from the room itself: no single case manager can stall, deflect, or "lose" a request when every party hears it at once and it enters the shared record.
When to demand an MDT
Unsafe placement, ignored reports
A child is in an unsafe placement and case management is ignoring written reports — your incident log and summary emails are the evidence base.
An approved alternative is being stalled
An alternative clinical program (such as a short-term residential facility) accepts the youth, but the case manager stalls on authorizing the move.
How to request an emergency MDT
- Put the request in writing to the case manager, the case management supervisor, and all attorneys on record — simultaneously, in one email.
- Use direct language:
The phrase "immediate safety concerns," the concrete clinical approval, and the 48-hour deadline each matter — together they make inaction a documented choice rather than a bureaucratic drift.
What happens if the team deadlocks?
An MDT requires consensus. If DCF or the agency refuses to move the child despite safety evidence, the facilitator must notify the court — opening the door for attorneys to request an emergency hearing before a magistrate or judge.
In other words: a deadlocked MDT is not a dead end. It is the procedural trigger that moves your evidence in front of a judge. Pair this with a parallel legal strategy so that by the time a hearing happens, every decision-maker already has your paper trail.
